Disclosure: Abivo is our product. Facts about other tools come from their own websites as of October 2026.

The short answer: If your finance team spends its week chasing overdue annual, renewal and usage invoices, Abivo takes that follow-up off their plate: its AI agent Kate calls, texts and emails customers about overdue invoices from your accounting system and hands disputes to your team. If your main loss is failed card payments on self-serve plans, start with the retry tools in your billing system, such as Stripe Smart Retries or Chargebee Smart Dunning, or a specialist like Butter Payments. If you want AR software with named AI agents and a payment portal, compare Upflow, Tesorio, Chargebee Receivables and Kolleno.

B2B SaaS has two collections problems that often get treated as one. The first is failed card payments, which the billing system retries. The second is invoiced revenue: annual contracts, renewals and usage overages on net 30 or net 60 terms, paid by an AP team that needs a PO or a reason to prioritize you. That second problem needs someone, or something, to follow up. Once three or more people in finance spend their week on that follow-up, or there are more open invoices than the team can chase, dedicated collections software pays for itself.

This guide compares ten tools. We left out pricing, because it changes often and most vendors quote by volume or revenue.

Abivo: An AI Agent That Does the Follow-Up

Best for: B2B SaaS finance teams collecting annual, renewal and usage invoices, especially teams with three or more people in AR or more open invoices than the team can chase.

What it does: Abivo's AI agent, Kate, follows up on overdue invoices by phone, text and email from your accounting system. Reminders name the details your customer's AP team needs to act, such as the subscription, the billing period and the PO, and one message can cover every open invoice on an account instead of a separate email per invoice. Each reminder includes a payment link. When a customer disputes a charge, questions a usage overage or asks for a person, Kate hands the account to your team with the full history.

How it fits a SaaS billing stack: Abivo works with Chargebee and your accounting system together, and runs its cadence after the billing system's own card retries.

Controls that matter in SaaS: set the follow-up cadence per account or per segment, so self-serve accounts and enterprise contracts get different treatment; pause follow-up on one invoice while a credit note or contract question is sorted out; flag strategic accounts so sensitive replies go to a named owner, such as the account executive or CSM. Companies with several entities keep follow-up separated by subsidiary. Kate follows up with customers in over 50 countries and works in any currency.

Proof: OFS Group, a fire safety and appliance repair service company, collected $842,518 in four months, with DSO down by more than 30 days. OFS is not a software company. Read the OFS Group case study.

Integration notes: Abivo connects to QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP and Chargebee, plus CSV upload. See how Abivo works and our guide to collections software for B2B SaaS.

Worth knowing: Abivo focuses on the follow-up conversation with your customer. It does not replace your billing system's card retries; it picks up after them.

Chargebee: Smart Dunning and Receivables on the Billing Record

Best for: SaaS companies already billing on Chargebee that want dunning and AR work to run on the same data.

What it does: Chargebee describes Smart Dunning as the engine that owns the dunning period, reminders and final actions, with a smart mode that reads gateway error codes and a custom mode on a schedule you set. Separately, Chargebee Receivables is described as an AI-native AR and collections platform built into the billing record: it scores customers by risk, builds collector queues, runs reminder sequences by email and SMS, lists calls as collector tasks, and tracks disputes as cases. Its AI runs in a suggestive mode by default, with an autonomous mode you can grant for specific segments.

Stripe Billing and Invoicing: Built-In Retries and Reminders

Best for: SaaS companies billing on Stripe that want failed payment recovery and invoice reminders without another tool.

What it does: Stripe Billing lists Smart Retries as AI-powered, working alongside card account updater and cancellation surveys, with customizable dunning flows that email customers about failed transactions and expiring payment methods. Stripe Invoicing says it can automatically send email reminders when invoices are due or past due, and customers can pay on a Stripe-hosted invoice page. See our failed payment retry strategy guide for how retries and follow-up fit together.

Upflow: Named AI Agents for B2B Finance Teams

Best for: B2B finance teams, with SaaS listed as a target industry, that want named AI agents, a payment portal and billing system integrations.

What it does: Upflow lists Collections, AP Portal, Cash App and Insights agents, with autonomy controls from suggestion only to fully autonomous. Collections outreach runs across emails, SMS, calls, letters and tasks. It names Stripe Billing, Chargebee and Zuora as billing integrations, and NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online and Xero among accounting systems.

Tesorio: AI Agents Across Order to Cash

Best for: Enterprise finance teams, including software companies, that want agents across invoicing, collections, cash application and forecasting.

What it does: Tesorio describes AI agents that handle the order-to-cash lifecycle. Its Collections Agent drafts follow-up emails, extracts payment promises and escalates to humans as needed, and Automated Dunning runs scheduled, escalating reminders. A Supplier Portals Agent submits invoices in Coupa and Ariba. Tesorio has a dedicated SaaS solutions page and lists connections to NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Workday, Zuora, Salesforce, Stripe and QuickBooks.

Comparing the two? See our Tesorio alternative page.

Chaser: Multichannel Reminders and Broad Integrations

Best for: SMB and mid-market finance teams that want automated reminders and cash flow forecasting.

What it does: Chaser offers AR automation with reminders by email and SMS, automated phone calls, in-app calling, a customer billing portal and an AI email generator. It lists two-way sync with Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP and Stripe, among others.

Comparing the two? See our Chaser alternative page.

Kolleno: Agents Built Around Your Credit Policy

Best for: CFOs, AR managers and credit controllers who want AI agents with adjustable autonomy.

What it does: Kolleno describes an order-to-cash platform covering collections, payments, cash application, disputes, credit risk and forecasting. It builds task-specific agents from your credit policy, with autonomy from insights only to fully independent execution. It names NetSuite, QuickBooks, MS Dynamics, Xero, Sage and GoCardless.

HighRadius: Collections Inside an Enterprise Suite

Best for: Large and mid-sized enterprises that want collections inside a wider finance platform.

What it does: HighRadius lists dunning emails, an in-app dialer and in-app payments for collections and AI features including payment date prediction and an AR co-pilot. It states pre-built integrations with SAP, Oracle, MS Dynamics and NetSuite.

Butter Payments: Failed Card Payment Recovery

Best for: Subscription businesses, including B2B and SaaS, whose biggest leak is involuntary churn from failed card payments.

What it does: Butter starts recovery as soon as a payment fails and handles each failed payment individually, using machine learning models tailored to each merchant to choose a retry strategy. It connects to payment processors and subscription platforms and names Stripe and Recharge. It is a retry tool, not an outreach tool, so invoiced accounts that simply have not paid still need follow-up.

Maxio: Billing With Built-In Dunning

Best for: B2B SaaS and subscription companies that want billing, revenue recognition and AR reporting in one place.

What it does: Maxio describes automated dunning and payment reminders to reduce delinquency, real-time DSO tracking and recurring, usage-based and event-triggered invoicing. It names QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, Salesforce and HubSpot among its integrations, and payment gateways including Stripe and Braintree.

Billing system dunning vs collections follow-up

These two jobs sound alike but solve different problems.

Billing system dunning works on payments the system can collect itself. A card declines, the system retries it and emails the customer to update the card. Stripe, Chargebee, Maxio and Butter all do versions of this. It works well for self-serve plans where the customer pays by card and the fix is a new card number.

Collections follow-up works on invoiced accounts where nothing can be retried. An annual invoice sits unpaid because it needs a PO, the AP contact changed, or nobody has looked at it. Another automated email rarely moves it. A person, or an agent like Kate, has to reach the right contact, answer questions, share a payment link and route disputes to the account owner.

Most SaaS companies need both. Let the billing system run its retries first, then hand the accounts that are still unpaid to follow-up.

How to choose for a B2B SaaS company

  • Split your overdue balance. Separate failed card payments from unpaid invoices on terms. Different tools solve each.

  • Use what your billing system already does. Turn on retries and dunning emails in Stripe, Chargebee or Maxio before buying anything for card failures.

  • Check the channels for invoiced accounts. Email-only reminders get lost in AP inboxes. Phone and text follow-up reach the people who can release payment.

  • Protect the relationship. Make sure strategic accounts can route sensitive replies to the account executive or CSM, and that you can pause one invoice during a contract or usage question.

  • Confirm the integrations. The tool should read from your billing system and your accounting system, and handle multiple entities and currencies if you sell internationally.

  • Measure. Track DSO, the share of invoiced revenue over 60 days, and hours your team spends on routine follow-up before and after.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best collections software for a B2B SaaS company? For follow-up on invoiced annual, renewal and usage revenue by phone, text and email, Abivo. For failed card payments, your billing system's retries in Stripe or Chargebee, or Butter Payments. For AR platforms with AI agents and a payment portal, Upflow, Tesorio, Chargebee Receivables or Kolleno.

Is Stripe or Chargebee dunning enough? For self-serve card payments, often yes. For invoiced customers on net terms, dunning emails alone tend to stall, because the blocker is usually a missing PO, a changed contact or an unanswered question that needs a conversation.

Does Abivo work with Chargebee? Yes. Abivo works with Chargebee and your accounting system together and runs its cadence after Chargebee's own card retries.

Is this a fit for an AR team of three or more? Yes. That is where routine follow-up eats the most hours. See our roundup of the best collections software for AR teams for a broader view.
